Turnpike 42

 

Description

A719 by Dunure and Maidens to Turnberry, where it joins A77 (turnpike 40a). At Pennyglen there is a branch 42a to Maybole (B7023).

In the Road Acts

1774: The road from Ayr by the New Bridge Of Doon at Greenan along the coast to Culzean, and from thence till it joins the road from Kirkoswald to Girvan above Turnberry houses.
1805: The road from Ayr by the New Bridge Of Doon at Greenan, Dunduff, Thomaston and Drumbegs where it falls into the great road from Maybole to Girvan, having a branch [a] leading to Maybole, through the farm of Enoch, passing through the parishes of Ayr, Maybole, Kirkoswald and Girvan.
1827: The road from Ayr by the Low Bridge Of Doon, Greenan, Dunduff, and Thomaston, to Drumbeg, dividing into two lines near Dunduff, and again uniting at Dunure Mill, having a branch [a] to Maybole by Pennyglen and Enoch, which enters the town at three points, passing through the parishes of Ayr, Maybole, and Kirkoswald.

MS Summary

1,2,4,5,6,7,8,9,11, direction stone 11¼, 12 (on 'branch leading to Maybole), 12, 16, 17, direction stone 17¼.

Dunure 6¼, Girvan 21, Ayr 1.

 

This is in the style of other extant milestones within Ayr Burgh.

Ayr 11¼, Maybole 2 left, Girvan 10¼ right. This is the direction stone at the Pennyglen junction. It is often almost totally concealed in the hedge. There used to be a welcome roadside bench in front of it.
