Turnpike 6

 

Description

The principal line of T6 is the main road from Kilmarnock by way of Kilmaurs to Stewarton, the present-day A735. The other line (a) is the minor road dividing from the principal between Kilmarnock and Kilmaurs and leading almost directly north to Stewarton.

In the Road Acts

1767: The road from Kilmarnock, by Kilmaurs, to Stewarton.
1805: The road from Kilmarnock to Stewarton, through Kilmaurs, with a line or cut [a] from Kilmaurs by or near Lochrigg, passing through the parishes of Kilmarnock, Kilmaurs and Stewarton.
1827: The road from Kilmarnock by Kilmaurs and Lochridge to Stewarton, with a branch [a] from the Altonhill road end by Shawbridge and Lockridge lime quarries, passing through the parishes of Kilmarnock, Kilmaurs, Dreghorn, and Stewarton.

MS Summary

One direction and milestone has been found, standing at the junction of the two lines of road, and one milestone just north of Kilmaurs.

Stewarton 4 Miles 1 Furlong
