Description

A719 from Ayr to the bypass, continuing in same direction on B743 until it meets A70 west of Muirkirk; then A70 to the county boundary.

In the Road Acts

1767: The road leading from Ayr by Mauchline, Sorn and Muirkirk towards Douglas, so far as that road is within the said county of Ayr.
1805: The road from Ayr by Muirkirk, to the march of the county, passing through the parishes of St Evox, Tarbolton, Mauchline, Sorn, Auchinleck and Muirkirk.
1827: The road from Ayr by Mauchline, Sorn, and Muirkirk, to the march of the county, passing through the parishes of Saint Evox, Tarbolton, Mauchline, Sorn, and Muirkirk.

MS Summary

Ayr 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 22. There are also direction stones at some junctions on the turnpike, included in the appropriate positions in the tables.

The survey and cataloguing of stones on this turnpike has been completed between Ayr and the junction with the modern A70. There are some stones still to be surveyed between there and the county boundary near Glenbuck.

Galston 13½, Mauchline 10.

Height 65cm.

On S side of road.

On Whitletts Road at entrance to Tesco.

This section of road was shared by T10 and T12. They diverged at Whitlett Toll, where T10 followed the present Low Road NNE, while T12 continued NE by the present High Road. See for instance the advertisement for 'Whitelett' toll to let in Glasgow Mercury, 5th April 1796, page 112.
